Caleb knows

Friday Afternoon – The Conversation That Changes Everything

1 – The Encounter

Caleb hadn’t planned to stop for coffee on his way home from work, but something about the weird tension in his chest had him craving something normal before the weekend kicked off.

The café was crowded, full of people trying to power through the last hours of their workweek. He placed his order, rubbing his temples, still troubled by the way thoughts of Bear Bash wouldn’t leave him alone.

And that’s when he saw Heath.

At first, Caleb almost didn’t recognize him.

Heath had always been the love-and-light pagan type—flowy shirts, earthy colors, a soft energy that felt like incense and tea and good vibes.

But the man standing by the window, staring into his black coffee like it held secrets?

That wasn’t Heath.

His clothes were darker, more fitted. His eyes, once bright and open, looked shadowed, like he hadn’t been sleeping.

And the energy around him?

It wasn’t soft anymore.

It was coiled, like something waiting to strike.

Caleb grabbed his drink and walked over. “Hey, man.”

Heath looked up slowly, like he’d been pulled from another world.

For a moment, there was something unreadable in his gaze.

Then—

A slow, knowing smile.

“Caleb.” Heath’s voice was lower, smoother than Caleb remembered. “Funny running into you.”

Caleb sat across from him. “Dude. What’s up with you?”

Heath tilted his head. “What do you mean?”

Caleb gestured at him. “The whole vibe. You’re not… you anymore.”

Heath chuckled softly. “Maybe I’m just finally becoming who I was meant to be.”

Caleb frowned. “Okay, that’s cryptic as fuck.”

Heath stirred his coffee absently. “What if I told you… that everything you’ve been trying to ignore all week is real?”

Caleb stiffened. “What?”

Heath leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. “Tank. Bear Bash. The way you felt like you couldn’t stop yourself.”

A chill crawled up Caleb’s spine.

He hadn’t told anyone about that.

Not even Jason.

“What are you talking about?” Caleb asked, keeping his tone even.

Heath sighed, sitting back. “I tried to warn Tank before it happened. I knew something was coming. But he didn’t listen.”

Caleb narrowed his eyes. “Warn him about what?”

Heath exhaled, gripping his coffee cup.

And then—

He spilled everything.

About Clay.

About Atlas.

About the night Clay took him home and whispered truths into his skin.

About how Atlas wasn’t just some guy—but something more.

About how Tank had been chosen.

And how Heath had seen the signs, felt the pull, and embraced it instead of fighting it.

By the time he finished, Caleb was staring at him, his stomach twisting.

“Dude.” Caleb swallowed hard. “You sound insane.”

Heath laughed. “I know. But you felt it, didn’t you?”

Caleb clenched his jaw.

He had.

He had felt something that night.

Something bigger than himself.

But that didn’t mean Heath was right.

…Right?

He stood abruptly. “I gotta go.”

Heath watched him with something knowing in his eyes.

“Go ahead,” Heath murmured. “But you’ll see the truth soon enough.”

Caleb didn’t answer.

He just turned and walked out, heart pounding.

He needed to talk to Jason.

2 – The Truth Cracks the Surface

Jason was already home when Caleb got back, sitting at the kitchen table, flipping through some medical notes.

He looked up as Caleb walked in. “Hey, babe.”

Caleb dropped his keys on the counter and stared at him.

Jason frowned. “What?”

Caleb exhaled sharply. “I ran into Heath today.”

Jason stilled.

It was subtle—a small shift in his shoulders, a flicker in his expression.

But Caleb saw it.

Jason knew something.

And that was the moment Caleb realized—

Heath wasn’t crazy.

Jason was just hiding the truth from him.

Caleb crossed his arms. “He told me everything.”

Jason set down his pen carefully. “…Everything?”

Caleb’s stomach twisted. “You tell me.”

Jason exhaled, rubbing his temples. “Caleb—”

“Don’t.” Caleb’s voice was sharp. “No bullshit. Just tell me if it’s real.”

Jason hesitated.

Just for a second.

But that was enough.

Caleb’s pulse pounded. “Holy shit. It’s real.”

Jason swallowed hard. “It’s—”

“Don’t you fucking lie to me.”

Jason sighed, closing his eyes for a second. When he opened them, he looked tired.

“It’s complicated.”

Caleb let out a shaky breath. “Jason, I felt it. I felt like I wasn’t myself. And now you’re sitting here acting like this is normal?”

Jason stood slowly. “I didn’t want you to get dragged into this.”

Caleb laughed bitterly. “Too late.”

Jason clenched his jaw. “Look, I don’t have all the answers. But yeah. Something’s happening to Tank.”

Caleb’s stomach dropped.

Jason ran a hand through his hair. “I’ve been trying to keep him grounded. Make sure he’s still him.”

Caleb took a deep breath, trying to process it all. “So what now?”

Jason hesitated. “Now? We just keep an eye on him.”

Caleb stared at him. “And what if we can’t?”

Jason didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And that terrified them both.
